Young Composer Competition

One of the goals of the Carroll Symphony Orchestra is to enrich the lives of children by exposing them to great music. In this spirit the CSO sponsors an annual Young Composer Competition, in which Conductor and Music Director Terry Lowry submits a theme to every elementary, junior high and high school music, band and chorus teacher in Carroll Country, as well as to area piano teachers.  Teachers are asked to encourage their students to write a short composition based on the theme, and submit the work.  The guidelines for the competition are as follows.

Eligibility

    • The competition is open to all students, elementary through high school, residing in Carroll County.
    • Competitors are to write a short piece for piano based on the given theme.
    • There is no minimum time requirement, however the piece should be no longer than four minutes.
    • Treatment of the theme may range from simple chordal accompaniment to advanced contrapuntal techniques and thematic transformation.

    • The winning compositions were performed by the Carroll Symphony Orchestra on October 11, at 7:30pm, at the Townsend Center for the Performing Arts on the campus of the University of West Georgia. For ticket information, call the Townsend Center Box Office at 678-839-4722.

2009 Sounds of Liberty Concert

The 2009 Sounds of Liberty concert, which serves as the prelude to the fireworks display at the campus of the Carrollton City Schools on July 4, will feature a performance by the Carroll Symphony Orchestra. The concert will take place in front of Carrollton Elementary School at 8:30pm.

The CSO, under the direction of Conductor and Music Director Terry Lowry, will perform a program of patriotic favorites by American composers. The program will begin with the raising of the flag of the Unites States by the American Legion Honor Guard during the playing of the National Anthem.

The concert will feature works by Aaron Copland, Morton Gould, Edward Kremser, John Philip Sousa and others and will include a salute to the Armed Forces and several patriotic sing-a-longs the entire family is sure to enjoy. Concert organizers plan to give out over 3,000 flags for the audience to wave in time with the familiar sounds of America the Beautiful, My Country ‘Tis of Thee, God of Our Fathers, The Battle Hymn of the Republic and The Stars and Stripes Forever. In the event of rain, the concert will take place in the Worship Center of Tabernacle Baptist Church.
