Destination University:
The Carroll Symphony Orchestra, is association with the University of West Georgia and the Townsend Center for the Performing Arts, is proud to announce the establishment of Destination University. The mission of this program is to inspire young people through the arts and sciences to develop a love for learning, to enrich their world, and broaden their vision of the future.
This program
Modeled after the only other program of its kind at the Franz Liszt School of Music in Weimar, Germany, will answer big questions from the bright minds of young people between the ages of 9 and 15. There will be ten 90-minute workshops per year, each tackling a different question led by instructors who are experts in their field. There will be rewards for attendance and field trips to places that schools rarely visit. Where are we headed this year? You’ll have to join us to find out. Each year will conclude with a special graduation ceremony in the spring.
Classes begin
October 11 with a session entitled “Is Music A Language?” led by Carroll Symphony Orchestra Conductor Terry Lowry and assisted by the Carroll Symphony Orchestra. Other classes include sessions in chemistry, visual arts, theater, movement, and lots of music. The Townsend Center will be rocking when UWG Director of Bands and percussionist Dr. Doug Overmier presents his workshop entitled “Got Rhythm?” From lights to pipes, Destination University will be a whirl wind tour of the arts and the sciences that make them possible.
The cost per student is $25 for all ten sessions
Financial assistantships are available
Space is limited to 50 students, age 9 to 15. Registration begins on July 4 at the Sounds of Liberty Concert on the campus of Carrollton Elementary School.
